Trail Snacks That Don’t Taste Like Cardboard: Mumma Dingo’s Deep Dive into FodBods

Alright, let’s talk snacks. Because let’s face it—no one hikes for the exercise alone. Sure, the views are great, the fresh air is refreshing, and pretending to be Bear Grylls for a few hours is fun. But deep down? We’re all thinking about food. What snacks did I pack? How soon can I eat them without looking like I’m bailing on the hike at kilometre one? And most importantly—will I regret every bite when I realise I’ve packed something dry, chalky, and downright gross?

See, I’ve always been suspicious of “protein” products. Most of the ones I tried over the years have been disappointments—chalky bars that taste like someone ground up a cardboard box, added fake sweetener, and slapped a “low sugar, high protein” sticker on the front. Yum, right? If I wanted to chew on dry plasterboard, I’d just lick my shed wall.

But here’s the kicker—when you’re out on the trails, you need sugar and protein. Your body’s screaming for fuel to keep you moving. You can only live on scroggin and apples for so long before your legs start plotting mutiny. And unless you want to lug a Tupperware of spaghetti bolognese up the mountain (been there, done that, regret everything), you need snacks that are lightweight, filling, and actually taste good.

So, being the dedicated Mumma Dingo I am, I went on a mission. A snack mission. I tried all sorts of protein bars, bites, and so-called “super snacks.” Let me tell you—my taste buds have been through some things. I endured more fake-chocolate disappointment than I’d like to admit. But after weeks of trial and error (and a few dramatic spit-outs in the bush), I finally found something worth shouting about.

Enter FodBods.

Now, this isn’t just some random imported brand trying to cash in on wellness trends. This is an Aussie-born business, created by Vanessa (a legend, clearly) who got sick of snacks that upset her gut and didn’t deliver on taste. She teamed up with dietitian Chloe to make protein goodies that are actually healthy, actually delicious, and actually kind to your stomach. As someone who has tested her gut limits with trail food more times than I care to share, that last part is a game-changer.

The Taste Test – Mumma Dingo vs. FodBods

I didn’t just nibble politely and nod. No, I put these babies through the ultimate test: hiking, road trips, desk snacking (the most dangerous kind), and the good old “I’m starving but too lazy to cook” situation.

Protein Mini BarsFlavours: Double Choc, Raspberry & Coconut, Strawberry Shortcake

Here’s the breakdown:

  • Raspberry & Coconut – Absolute winner. Perfect balance of fruity, sweet, and filling without being heavy. It tasted like an actual treat rather than punishment for being “healthy.”

  • Strawberry Shortcake – Close second. If you like your snacks a little sweeter, this one is your mate.

  • Double Choc – Okay, confession: I don’t like chocolate. Never have, never will. So, it was destined for the bottom of my list. But my husband (who does love chocolate) thought it was pretty great, so don’t let my choc-hating bias put you off.

The best part? These bars are dense, moist (not dry and crumbly like 99% of protein bars), and super filling. I found myself slicing one in half—morning tea sorted, afternoon tea sorted. One little bar, two snack windows. Efficient, right?

Nibbles

Flavours: Rosemary & Sea Salt, Cranberry & Vanilla, Dark Choc

These were the real surprise packet. Think of them as the hiker’s answer to chips or biscuits. But instead of inhaling a family-size pack of Twisties in one sitting (no judgement if you do, I’ve been there), you eat a handful of these and—bam—you’re satisfied. Rosemary & Sea Salt had me hooked, but Cranberry & Vanilla was a close second. Again, the Dark Choc didn’t win me over (choc bias strikes again), but I know plenty of people who’d love them.

And here’s the next kicker: the bag lasts a whole week. Yes, a WEEK. Unless you’re hiking with children, in which case it’ll last 10 minutes flat.

Why FodBods Stood Out

Here’s why I rate FodBods above the rest:

  1. They’re Aussie. Supporting local legends will always get my vote over some random overseas giant.

  2. They’re cost-effective. Hiking gear already drains the wallet—finding snacks that don’t cost the equivalent of a tank of fuel is a win.

  3. They taste good. Radical concept, I know. But honestly, most protein products fail here. These nailed it.

  4. They’re filling. No one wants to stop every 20 minutes for a snack break. One FodBod bar genuinely keeps you going.

The Mumma Dingo Verdict

I’ll be straight with you: I don’t recommend products I wouldn’t use myself. My pack is prime real estate—if it’s in there, it’s because it’s worth carrying. And FodBods? They’ve earned their spot.

These aren’t just “diet” snacks. They’re legit trail food, busy-parent fuel, and emergency car snacks (don’t pretend you don’t have a stash in the glovebox). They’re tasty, practical, Aussie-made, and, most importantly, they don’t make me gag halfway through eating them. That alone is worth shouting from the mountaintop.

So, keep your eyes peeled. I’m working on getting these beauties stocked in the Mumma Dingo shop. Because if I can save just one fellow hiker from suffering through another dry, chalky, fake-choc “protein” disaster, my job here is done.

Until then—go find yourself some FodBods, pack them in your day bag, and thank me when you’re halfway through a hike and realise you’re not hangry anymore.
